A: No, I have not worked as a classroom teacher in a school. Instead, I chose to specialise full-time as a one-to-one personal maths tutor. This allows me to focus exclusively on individual students, tailoring lessons to their unique strengths and challenges. Unlike classroom teaching, where many students are taught at once, my approach ensures personalised attention and customised support.

How does a tutor differ to a teacher in a school?

School teachers specialise in classroom teaching, which not only involves imparting their subject knowledge, but entails classroom management, marking tests, maintaining and recording pupils' progress and development, organising parents evenings, lesson planning, supporting students academic and personal difficulties, supervising and assisting newly qualified teachers, undertaking pastoral duties and participating in social or sporting events. Consequently, teachers are limited by not having time to spend on the needs of the individual student. Private tutors are able to teach at the pace of the individual, move on once a concept is understood and teach in a way that they believe works best for each individual student.

Grade 9 Mastery is focused exclusively on Grade 9 level questions, and is designed to help students aiming for grades 8 and 9 in their GCSE maths exam. Unlike standard GCSE tuition, I concentrate on the most challenging exam-style problems that reflect the highest level of exam performance. It is ideal for motivated students who want to master the skills and techniques necessary to achieve exceptional results. This targeted approach ensures these tutoring sessions meet the demands of the most competitive maths candidates.

Qualifications and experience are just one part of what makes a good teacher/tutor. There are good and bad teachers regardless of certificates and length of service. My online tuition requires: - A computer, laptop or tablet. - Headphones/microphone (unless built-in the computer, laptop or tablet).- An electronic pen if possible (but a mouse will suffice if not available).- A free account with 'BitPaper' (online whiteboard). - Google Meet (for audio).

What if I need to cancel?

That's fine, family life can be hectic and now and again you'll need to cancel! Please provide at least 24 hours notice and I will always endeavour to rearrange the tutorial on an alternative day if possible. If not, I will have to charge the full fee as set out in my terms.

How frequent should the tuition sessions be?

Most students have a one-hour session once a week, though some may need more. More sessions are usually only requested in the run-up to exams and half-term, which is absolutely fine. My recommendation is once a week, but less frequent or shorter sessions could still be beneficial for some students.

Although I also hold a degree in Biomedical Sciences in addition to my mathematics degree, I do not teach biology, chemistry, or physics. I firmly believe that specialised subject knowledge is vital for effective learning and exam success, so I dedicate 100% of my focus to maths.
