Timeline
1999

Graduated from
Southampton University
In 1999 I graduated from the University of Southampton with a BSc (Hons) degree in Biomedical Sciences.
2001
Began working in the
pharmaceutical industry
I then started a career in the area of drug safety called pharmacovigilance. This involved monitoring and reporting adverse events to health authorities for both trial and marketed drugs.
2012

Decided I wanted a career I felt passionate about
In 2012, I decided to change career to one I felt passionate about, and began the journey of completing a mathematics degree I'd been studying for a number of years as a hobby. To support myself, I worked part time as a local one-to-one maths tutor.
2017
Graduated from
the Open University
In 2017 I graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics with the Open University. As I enjoyed the experience of tutoring maths one-to-one part-time so much, I decided to continue this as a full-time career instead of training to be a maths teacher and work in a classroom.
2020
Moved to Online Tutoring
In 2020, I moved to online tutoring to keep my business going during the Covid era. I was surprised at how well the transition worked, and the more sessions I had, the more I realised that online maths tuition actually worked better than face-to-face.
2024
The Future
Over a decade later, I'm more enthusiastic, driven and passionate about what I do than ever before. To me, tutoring maths isn't a job at all, but a vocation that aligns perfectly with my interests, values and sense of purpose.

Adapting to each child
Finding the right tutor for your child can be challenging. All children are different, and you need to make sure that the tutor you hire is the right fit. Each child has their own individual needs; some lack confidence in their abilities, others are good at maths but haven't been able to demonstrate their knowledge due to ADHD, ASD or similar issues.
Many students achieve lower than expected grades because they work it out in their heads but don't show their working. Some children don't like authority figures in a school setting, but can work really well with a one-to-one tutor so long as they're not treated as a child. So, a good tutor needs to adapt to the child's needs accordingly.

Experience
In recent years the tutoring market has exploded with the number of agencies offering online maths tuition. Most of their tutors are either students at university, or recent graduates in need of some extra cash. Many have achieved excellent academic success, but from my own experience, it takes many years to become really good at tutoring maths.
Not only do you need to communicate your knowledge to students who are just getting their heads around new and abstract mathematical concepts (and to be engaging and build rapport), but you also need to have had the experience of tutoring students with varying backgrounds as discussed above.
Having tutored maths for over a decade now, I've seen it all. I'm able to understand the individual needs of each student, regardless of background, and provide bespoke online maths tuition that meets their requirements - whether it's KS3, GCSE or A level maths tutoring.
Unlike some subjects, maths builds upon previous foundational topics, so identifying weaknesses is very important, and so I ensure this is addressed at the start. I also encourage students to not fear mathematical 'dead ends' and to persevere. All maths students encounter problems along the way and it is the act of working through problems that produces results.
Patience & Encouragement
In addition, for learning to take place, students need to feel at ease, not worry about saying something 'stupid' and feel comfortable to make mistakes. I make sure to be calm, kind and extremely patient, so it doesn’t matter how many times we have to repeat a concept; we will persist until it's eventually understood.

No Contracts
Unlike some tutors, I don't charge for blocks of tuition or have any contracts, so you're free to stop whenever you choose. There's therefore no risk in trying a session to see how your child gets on.
Interests
In addition to maths, I enjoy cycling, going to the gym and hiking with Delphi, my Belgian Shepherd rescue dog! I've always been interested in astronomy, and have a large computerized telescope that I use to observe the night sky. I also like photography, and enjoy taking shots of coastal landscapes and the South Downs near my home in Seaford, East Sussex.

I've also become interested in making GCSE and A Level maths walkthrough videos. I provide step by step solutions to typical examination style questions, and post them on my YouTube channel.

I'm acutely aware that not every family is able to afford a private tutor for their child, and so this is at least something I'm able to offer free of charge. The internet is a huge resource of free material for today's maths students.
I've produced a subset of videos titled 'Aiming for Grade 9', in which I walkthrough questions similar to the most difficult questions in previous GCSE examinations. I hope these will be helpful for those students looking to achieve the top grades.
